Family Planning 2020 launched with a simple premise:
Every woman and girl, no matter where she lives, should have access to modern contraception.
By effectively facilitating new partnerships between countries, donors, manufacturers, the research community, and civil society, FP2020 broke through longstanding barriers and generated new commitment and momentum for family planning efforts worldwide.

Between 2012 and 2020
More than 130 governments, foundations, multilateral agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector entities joined the FP2020 partnership.
Dozens of countries successfully strengthened and expanded their family planning programs.
Millions of women and girls gained access to contraception.
A new movement was born, founded in data and evidence and guided by the principles of human rights.

SRH Preparedness Toolkit
FP2020 launches Ready to Save Lives: Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in Emergencies, a groundbreaking SRH preparedness toolkit developed in collaboration with JSI, IPPF, WRC, UNFPA, and IAWG.

Beyond 2020 Vision Framework
FP2020 unveils the vision framework for the post-2020 partnership, developed after months of wide-ranging consultations with the global family planning community.

Growth Milestone: 320 Million Users
Our impact reaches 320 million total users of modern contraception in the 69 FP2020 countries.

2020 International AIDS Conference
FP2020 and AVAC co-host an online satellite session on integrating HIV services with family planning and other SRH care. FP2020 and AVAC also launch a new joint website on SRH/HIV integration.

FP2020 Hosts Virtual Focal Point Workshops
The Asia and Anglophone Africa focal point workshops are shifted to an online format. Additional virtual workshops are convened for the Francophone countries in July and for all regions in October and November.

FP2020 issues a statement calling for family planning to be recognized as an essential service in every country.
This call to action seeks to ensure that accessible family planning services are available to all, driving positive transformations and nurturing healthier communities worldwide.

Third Francophone Regional Focal Point Workshop
Over 140 participants convene in Senegal for FP2020’s concluding in-person meeting, originally intended in Bangladesh but adapted to a virtual three-day Zoom gathering.

COVID cancels Reproductive Health meeting, FP2020 arranges hybrid gathering to address SRHR and FP in emergencies.

Nairobi Summit on ICPD25
Nairobi hosts an event with UNFPA and FP2020 to recommit to Cairo’s Population Conference and 2030 Agenda.

Thriving Together Campaign
The Margaret Pyke Trust launches Thriving Together: Environmental Conservation and Family Planning. FP2020 joins with more than 150 organizations working in 170 countries to pledge support for the campaign.

The Echo Trial
ECHO study in 4 African countries found no significant difference in HIV risk among 3 contraceptives, highlighting young women’s vulnerability to HIV and unintended pregnancy.

Third Anglophone Africa Regional Focal Point Workshop
More than 140 participants convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Focal point teams from 18 commitment-making countries include youth focal points for the first time.

Technical Assistance Coordination Mechanism Launched
Hosted by the World Health Organization in partnership with FP2020, the TA Mechanism assists FP2020 countries with implementing their adolescent and youth commitments.

The "Global Consensus Statement on Meaningful Adolescent and Youth Engagement" is launched.
This statement champions the significant involvement of young individuals in shaping policies and programs that affect them.

Fifth International Conference on Family Planning
Rwanda hosts the fifth International Conference on Family Planning. The FP2020 Reference Group holds its in-person meeting the day before the opening ceremony.

Third Asia Regional Focal Point Workshop
More than 100 participants gather in Kathmandu, Nepal, including focal point teams (with youth representatives) from 13 commitment-making countries.

New FP2020 Commitments Announced
Egypt, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Sri Lanka are welcomed as new FP2020 commitment-making countries. Promundo joins as an institutional partner.

Second Francophone Regional Focal Point Workshop
FP2020 added youth focal points to their system in 2017, with young people serving as “youth representatives” at workshops. In 2019, they made them full-fledged youth focal points in all commitment-making countries.

Second Anglophone Africa Regional Focal Point Workshop
Over 100 individuals gathered in Lilongwe, Malawi, which included focal point teams from 15 countries that have made commitments.

FP2020 Reference Group Meeting in Nigeria
The two-day agenda includes a focus on Nigeria’s family planning program, with presentations by the Government of Nigeria and key civil society partners.

International Youth Day 2017
FP2020 welcomes youth-led commitments from Alliance des Jeunes Ambassadeurs, International Youth Alliance, Organization of Africa Youth, Tanzania Youth, and Uganda Youth.

The Family Planning Summit
The Family Planning Summit 2017 united FP2020 partners, attracting new commitments and addressing critical issues. Eleven Global Goods were announced.

Latin America and Caribbean Conference
FP2020 and a coalition of partners organize the Latin America and Caribbean Conference to Reduce Inequalities in Sexual and Reproductive Health, held in Cartagena, Colombia.

Rapid Response Mechanism Launched
The Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) provided small grants for family planning in FP2020 nations, benefiting millions with $11M for 122 projects in 49 countries. Launched in 2014, RRM ended in 2020, making way for a new partnership structure in 2021.

New Commitments Announced
Benin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Mauritania, and Myanmar become FP2020 commitment makers.

Track20 launched
FP2020’s Metrics Working Group established contraceptive use baseline and Core Indicators. Track20 project helps countries collect, analyze, and report family planning data.

The London Summit
World leaders commit to reaching 120 million women and girls with modern contraception by 2020. The FP2020 initiative is launched.

New FP2020 Commitments Announced
Four new countries – Afghanistan, Lao PDR, South Sudan, and Vietnam – have been announced as committed to FP2020. Population Services International and the Margaret Pyke Trust have also joined as institutional partners.
